A translation is like a pane of glass: it is noticed only when there are cracks, bubbles or other imperfections.

In other words, if a text reads like a translation, it is a poor translation. Good translators toil Jeeves-like in the background, unseen and unnoticed. Just as a good butler does not strip to the waist and invite guests to dance with him on the table, translators do not draw attention away from the message being communicated: for instance by remaining slavishly close to the original text, riding roughshod over cultural differences or generally giving readers the impression that they are being fobbed off with an ersatz version of the original.
